Ukraine Opens Exhibition in the UN Headquarters to Highlight Country’s Contribution in the Creation and Development of the United Nations
06 October 2015 22:02

On 5 October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has opened an exhibition in the UN Headquarters. “Ukraine and UN: United by Peace” highlights major milestones of cooperation between Ukraine and the United Nations.

The project is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and Ukraine's candidacy for a non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the period of 2016-2017. The exhibition runs from 5 to 9 October 2015 while the elections are scheduled for 15 October.

"In 70 years of the UN existence Ukraine has proved its effectiveness as a reliable partner in establishing peace and security in unstable regions of the world. We have made a significant contribution to strengthening regional stability and today we count on the same support in return. Our future membership of the UN Security Council aims at strengthening the UN authority in the world", Yuriy Sergeyev, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN said at the opening of the exhibition.

Jeffrey Feltman, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Cristina Gallach, UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, and a number of Permanent Representatives of UN member-states, including Ambassadors of Canada, Great Britain and Japan, attended the opening ceremony.

The exhibition features photographs, documents and a timeline that presents key moments of Ukraine’s participation in the UN. Visitors can explore Ukraine’s role in the creation of the United Nations and its major contribution to the UN peacekeeping operations.

One of the facts that illustrates Ukrainian stake in the peacemaking efforts speaks for itself – since 1992, more than 34,000 of military and civilian personnel from Ukraine have performed their noble duty under the UN flag in more than 20 UN peacekeeping operations and missions around the globe.

The exhibition also stresses the importance of the UN General Assembly Resolution 68/262 “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine”, adopted in March 2014 shortly after the annexation of Crimea by Russia.

The project allows Ukraine to showcase its ever deepening commitment to ensuring international peace and security, and engaging with the United Nations as the country looks forward to being elected as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period of 2016-2017. The exhibition on the eve of the vote is an important element of Ukraine’s information campaign supporting the election campaign
