26 February 2015 23:42

President Petro Poroshenko has discussed the humanitarian situation in Donbas with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Peter Maurer.

The Head of State emphasizes that despite the Minsk agreements, the situation in Donbas remains tense, which particularly affects civilians of the region. The parties have discussed the problems of delivery of humanitarian cargo, medicines and products to the occupied territories.

"We continue providing humanitarian assistance to the Donbas regions affected by terrorists and we insist that the other parties to the agreements should comply with their commitments," Petro Poroshenko stressed.

The President has drawn the attention of the ICRC President to the problem of hostages, which are still kept in terrible conditions in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. He emphasizes that the item "on immediate and unconditional liberation of all war prisoners " is one of the most important items in the Minsk agreements.

The President has underlined the necessity of immediate liberation of Nadiya Savchenko from Russian prison. Demanding her liberation, she has declared a hunger strike 10 weeks ago already and now she is in a very bad condition. "She did nothing bad. She was just protecting her country" Petro Poroshenko noted. The Head of State has mentioned that Nadiya Savchenko is a people's deputy of Verkhovna Rada and a member of the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Thus, she has a diplomatic immunity.

Peter Maurer has informed Petro Poroshenko on the acting programs of the organization in Ukraine and the plans to increase the annual budget for Ukraine by CHF 20-25 million. At the moment, the budget equals CHF 48 million.

The meeting has also been attended by Head of the ICRC Delegation to Ukraine Michel Masson, Deputy Head of the ICRC Delegation to Ukraine Juerg Eglin, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin and Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Valeriy Chaly.
